This was a great recap. Quick question. I recently turned on paid subscriptions but haven’t gotten as much conversion as I thought would happen. I also would love to know how to get the attention of Substack for referrals? Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Hey Elizabeth! When you say "as much conversion as you thought" what do you mean by that?

I subscribed to your newsletter because you were quoted and promoted by substack:) thank you for taking the time to respond to

Me!! I am happy to trade cookbooks, etc for advice:)

I thought that we would get at least 10% conversion from unpaid to paid. We average 60% open rate/readership a week and we know people are reading and cooking our recipes but switching to paid has been slow.

We have been on GMA 3 times and have been mentioned in print as well but I don’t think we’ve had any help from substack and I understand that they promote marketing (so we don’t have to:)) in their sales pitch.

I need help/a mentor friend to understand how to grow and get people to go paid.

Does that help?

Oh I see, you're talking about your own newsletter. I get it now. Two things I'd do:

1. Send your paid posts all of your free subscribers each time with a peek at what they're missing. And make the paywall pretty loose (E.g. last 30-40% paywalled)

2. Make sure the stuff behind the paywall is juicy.

Thank you. I appreciate your time. We are doing number 1 but I don’t know if what we put behind the paywall is juicy. Would you be willing to move this conversation to email? If not, I understand. But if so, I would love that.

Thank you for the great article. Would it be alright if I translate some of it(of course only free versions) into Korean and share it for free, so that more Korean startup professionals can read it and learn about your newsletter?
